Hey everyone, Jordi here—your friendly neighborhood drummer! If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to live life behind the kit in a metal band, here’s a no-holds-barred look at the highs and lows. Spoiler alert: despite all the challenges, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Let’s dive into what makes being a metal musician both thrilling and downright tough.
There’s no feeling in the world like being on stage, surrounded by walls of sound and a sea of metalheads. When the lights go down, and we launch into the first track, it’s like an electric surge through my veins. Whether we’re playing to a packed festival or a small club, the energy from the crowd is insane. It’s a connection that words can’t really describe—you just have to experience it. When I’m behind the drums, everything else fades away, and it’s just me, my band, and the music. This is what I live for.
Metal is one of the most expressive genres out there. We’re free to experiment with tempo, intensity, and aggression. I love that I get to incorporate elements of jazz, punk, and even classical music into our songs. The creative possibilities are endless, and we don’t have to stick to any mold. Being in a metal band means we can be as loud, heavy, and intense as we want—no compromises.
Playing in a band is like being in a family. We’re on this journey together, through thick and thin. We’re constantly pushing each other to get better, and there’s a camaraderie that you just don’t find anywhere else. We’ve spent countless hours together, whether it’s on the road, in the studio, or just hanging out after a gig. We’re a team, and that bond is something I wouldn’t trade for anything.
Metal fans are the most passionate people you’ll ever meet. They’re loyal, dedicated, and they give everything back tenfold. Meeting fans after a show and hearing how our music has impacted them—it’s what makes all the hard work worth it. Metal fans know the lyrics, the stories, and they genuinely care about the music and the people behind it. You guys are what keeps us going, and I can’t thank you enough.
Playing metal drums is physically demanding. It’s a full-body workout, and after a show, I’m drenched in sweat and sore all over. Not to mention the countless hours spent practicing and pushing myself to the limit. But, hey, it’s worth it—nothing like a good drum solo to keep you in shape! That said, it’s not uncommon to deal with back pain, strained muscles, and bruised knuckles. It’s part of the gig, and I embrace it, but there’s no denying that it takes a toll.
Let’s be real: being in a metal band isn’t exactly a ticket to financial freedom. Touring is expensive, recording is expensive, and the income isn’t always steady. Most of us are juggling side jobs to keep things going, and the industry can be brutal. But if you’re in this for the money, you’re in the wrong place. We’re here because we love what we do, not for a paycheck.
Don’t get me wrong—I love seeing new places and meeting fans all over the world. But life on the road can be exhausting. You’re away from family, you’re living out of a suitcase, and sometimes you don’t even know what city you’re in. It’s hard to keep any sense of routine, and the constant travel can be a mental and physical drain. But the moment we step on stage, it all fades away, and it’s worth every minute.
The music industry is always changing, and there’s always pressure to evolve while staying true to our sound. It’s a balancing act, and it can be tough. You want to push boundaries, but you also want to keep the fans who have been there from day one. There’s also pressure from within—every time I sit down at the drums, I’m pushing myself to be better than before. It’s a challenge, but it’s one that I’m up for.
For all the struggles, being in a metal band is something I wouldn’t give up for the world. Every hardship is a part of the journey, and it’s what makes us who we are. Playing music is my passion, and sharing that with my bandmates and our fans is something I’m incredibly grateful for. The highs make it all worth it, and even the lows are lessons that help us grow.
So, if you’ve ever thought about picking up an instrument and starting a band, I say go for it. Embrace the challenges, because they’re all part of what makes this life so fulfilling. Keep supporting the bands you love, because we wouldn’t be here without you. And remember, no matter how tough things get, there’s always another show, another song, and another fan to make it all worth it.
